when did i meet k.chico for the first time? it was during one of our many dj journeys through time and space. although i have already seen many things, time traveling remains the most exciting experience available to me as a dj. in particular neo-berlin in the year 2187 had a profound effect on me.
somehow he attracted my attention immediately. first i heard his music, which fought its way to me through the gaggle of voices and whirr of street noise and air transport.i followed the sound and there he stood. an old man around 200 years old with his guitar and an anachronistic computer. i listened to some of his songs and although i found myself far from home, felt an immediate affinity with them. i spoke to him and learnt that he had in his youth lived near where i now do. also his songs were about this exciting time in a youthful and wild berlin shortly after the turn of the millennium. the parties, the clubs, the djs, the love, the transience. in short: the depth and beauty of this unique city.
i was excited. i immediately offered to release a cd back in the past on our label “festplatten”. he agreed with the release of his material, didn’t however know what cds were, so suggested that we release his songs either on vinyl or mp3000 files. finally we agreed on a maxi release on vinyl and an online release in the appropriate mp3 format for our time. and so it came to be, that we are privileged to release, as our 35th “festplatten” release, some 170 years before our time, the wonderful k.chico album, “when i was young”.
i was then able to lean back and relax. until a thought occurred to me, just as crazy as it was brilliant: to seek out k.chico and to bring him back here to sing his songs for us in the present. it took a long time, but somehow i eventually stood before his door. he opened it with a smile and told me that he’d been expecting me…
